An American biochemist and pharmacologist, Gertrude Belle Elion is a true icon in the scientific community. After her grandfather passed away when she was 15 years old, Gertrude was determined to make a difference in medicine and went on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry from Hunter's College and a Master of Science in Chemistry from NYU. After receiving 15 rejections from various fellowship programs due to gender bias, Gertrude was reduced to enrolling in secretarial school.
However, six weeks after her enrollment, Gertrude found a job as a food quality supervisor for a supermarket and began her career in research. Doors began to open for her as she continued to pursue her goal to cure disease. Her first big break was in 1950 when she worked as an assistant for George H. Hitchings at Burroughs-Wellcome, now known as GlaxoSmithKline. She helped develop a way to trick cancer cells into accepting artificial compounds for growth. Her work led to the production of the anti-cancer drugs tioguanine and 6-MP.
The Nobel Prize committee awarded Gertrude Elion, Sir James W. Black, and George H. Hitchings the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1988 "for their discoveries of important principles for drug treatment".
